Dallas, Texas – Mississippi State men's golf has two days to bounce back from a tough start Sunday at the Trinity Forest Invitational.
MSU shot a team score of 298 in the opening round at the par-71, 7,486-yard Trinity Forest Golf Club to finish the day in a four way tie for 13th.
"I thought today was a great test of golf. The wind was up the majority of the day, we just did not do a good enough job of controlling our golf ball in the elements. We had too many misses on the wrong side of perfect which ultimately cost us a number of shots," head coach Dusty Smith said.
Junior Cameron Clarke shot 2-over-par 71 to finish Sunday as MSU's best performer. Clarke's day was highlighted by a four hole stretch on the front nine where he carded four birdies.
Senior Garrett Johnson and sophomore Ford Clegg finished the day 2-over while freshmen Hunter Logan carded a round one score of 76. Sophomore Austin Vukovits rounded out the Bulldogs with a score of 2-over.
Smith commented, "We were not far off from posting a solid round. We have to demand more out of ourselves and make sure we value our golf ball better tomorrow. I am very proud of the competitive character of this team. We fought all day and were able to finish our last few holes the right way. Tomorrow is a big opportunity for this team. We need to dig deep and keep pressing forward. There is a lot of golf left."
State will turn its attention to round two in Dallas at 8:50 a.m. CT from the 10th hole tee as Monday will bring a new round of 18-hole stroke play.
