CARY, N.C./MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - Junior Florian Broska highlighted the day for Mississippi State men's tennis Friday, going undefeated (3-0) in singles and doubles play on the first day of action at the Duke Bonk Invitational in Cary, N.C.
Broska opened the day by teaming up with Bulldog true freshman Davide Tortora – who was opening his career in the Maroon and White. The duo cruised through UNC Charlotte's duo of Cole Brainard and Colin Thomson 6-0 in the opening round of the Black draw. The State pair then had a quick turn around and triumphed over Furman's tandem of Jake Munns and Clarke Wilson 6-4 in the semifinals. Broska and Tortora will take the court Saturday morning at 9 a.m. ET against Bruno Caula and Daniel Groom of UNC Wilmington for the title of the Black draw.
In singles, Broska completed his perfect day by downing Liberty's Chase Burton 6-0, 6-4 in the Blue draw. Saturday morning at 10 a.m. ET, Broska will meet Austin Hussey (UNC WIlmington) in the quarterfinals.
In the White draw, Tortora proved to be a fierce competitor in singles, but the top seed ultimately fell to Virginia Tech's Brandon Perez 6-4, 6-4 in a tight affair. The Bulldog rookie will take court in singles consolation Saturday at 11 a.m. ET against Tristan Smith of North Carolina State.
Meanwhile, in Milwaukee at the 44th Milwaukee Tennis Classic, State's Giovanni Oradini and Nicolas Ocana were in action for State Friday as well.
The 24th-ranked senior Oradini spared no time on the court in singles, as he cruised through Arizona State's William Kirkman in a comfortable 6-3, 6-2 contest. The No. 2-seeded Bulldog will take on Inigo Torre Martin (VCU) in Saturday's second round.
The freshman Ocana started in his first career singles match as a Bulldog Friday but had a tall task in taking on the top seed in the event - Illinois' 79th-ranked Zeke Clark. Ocana proved to have fire under his belt as the match started but ultimately fell 6-4, 6-0. The MSU newcomer will take the court again tomorrow in the consolation draw, meeting VCU's Lleyton Cronje.
In doubles, Ocana and Oradini paired up for the first time ever as the No. 7 seed. The duo produced a hard-fought match but was edged by Wisconsin's Jared Pratt and Lenard Soha 9-7 in their opener. The tournament is not holding a consolation doubles draw but the Bulldog duo did play one consolation match to end Friday's action, defeating the San Diego tandem of Joel Gamerov and Marvin Schaber 8-5.
