MILWAUKEE, Wisc. /CARY, N.C. -Â Singles play highlighted the day for the Mississippi State men's tennis team as the Bulldogs went 6-2 combined on the second day of action at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic and Duke Bonk Invitational.
Â
In Milwaukee at the 44th Milwaukee Tennis Classic, State's second-seeded Giovanni Oradini registered a pair of tough victories to advance to the tournament's singles quarterfinals.
Â
The 24th- ranked senior started his morning a little off by dropping the first frame of his match 6-3 to Virginia Commonwealth's Torre Martin. Oradini fought back to win the second frame 6-4. After a close third set was nearing an end, a rain delay ensued. Upon resumption of the match, Oradini found himself serving at 6-5 down. Buckling down, Oradini saved two match points in that game to force a tiebreaker for the match, where he grasped full control, finally taking the match 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(2).
Â
Oradini then had a quick turnaround, preparing to play Kentucky's Gabriel Diallo in the Round of 16 soon after. After going down 4-1 in a first-set tiebreaker, the Bulldog veteran won six consecutive points to grab the first 7-6(4). After that, the match was his, as he cruised through the second set 6-3.
Â
Oradini will battle Southern Cal's seventh-seeded Mor Bulis in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
Â
Continuing the singles win train in Milwaukee was newcomer Nicolas Ocana, taking on Lleyton Cronje of VCU In consolation action. The freshman fought his way to a first-set tiebreak and won it 7-6(3) but then dropped the second 2-6. Ocana then regrouped for a supertiebreaker that would decide the match. He showed great match toughness by winning it 10-7 and the match 7-6(3), 2-6, 1-0(7).
Â
In the consolation Round of 16, Ocana dropped a 6-2, 7-6(7) decision to Tennessee's Martim Prata. The rookie Bulldog will play one more match on Sunday.
Â
Leading things off for the Bulldogs at the Duke Bonk Invite in Cary, North Carolina, was freshman Davide Tortora in consolation of the White draw. Tortora cruised through his first set 6-2 against North Carolina State's Tristan Smith. In the second frame, Tortora pushed Smith to a second set tiebreak, ultimately dropping the frame 7-6(4). In the deciding and final set, Tortora breezed 6-1 to capture the win.
Â
In the consolation semifinals, the Bulldog rookie notched a straight-set triumph, downing Benjamin Wayand of UNC Charlotte 6-3, 6-4. Tortora will meet William & Mary's Joseph Brailovsky in the White draw consolation title match on Sunday morning.
Â
Junior Florian Broska had a rougher start to his morning in the Blue draw. The junior came out strong in his opening set, taking it 6-3 over UNC Wilmington's Austin Hussey. Hussey fought back to win the second 6-4 and then claimed the third 6-1.
Â
Broska refocused against North Carolina State's Robin Cantry in the fifth-place bracket of the draw, ousting the Wolfpack star 7-5, 6-1. The Bulldog will play Sunday morning for the fifth place title, meeting Michael Shepheard of Virginia Tech.
Â
