Mississippi State Volleyball Reaches 10 Wins Thursday

STARKVILLE – Thursday afternoon, Mississippi State volleyball cruised to a sweep of Jackson State.
Thursday night, the Bulldogs battled to a five-set victory against North Florida.
After taking both matches of a Hail State Invitational doubleheader at the Newell-Grissom Building, State improved to 10-1 on the season, doubling the amount of wins the program record in 2018.
MSU had to dig deep in the final set of the day to avoid splitting the doubleheader. Down 7-1 in the fifth set to North Florida, State went on a 7-1 run to tie the set before ultimately taking it, 15-10.
"We had to make some in-game adjustments on the tip and the off-speed stuff in the middle of the court," MSU volleyball head coach Julie Darty said. "I was really proud of how we responded in the fifth set. To be down that much at the switch and to make a decision as a team that we were not going to walk out of this gym with a loss next to our name on our home court, I am just so proud of the kids."
"I don't think it was one of our best offensive nights, but 19 blocks and 95 digs is really good," Darty said.
Sophomore Gabby Waden shined all day, but she exploded in the night cap. After collecting 10 kills and a .588 hitting percentage against Jackson State, Waden picked up 24 Thursday night on a .409 hitting mark.
"What a night for Gabby Waden," Darty said. "I think she carried the load offensively. It's hard to say that we were trying to equally distribute the ball when Gabby Waden was just on fire. I thought Alleah Stamatis did a nice job of finding the hot hand and just feeding her. If they can't stop her, let's just keep going."
Fellow sophomore Deja Robinson collected 11 blocks against North Florida, a career-high and the most by a Bulldog since Jazmyne Johnson earned the same amount against Alabama in 2016. Robinson is also the last Bulldog, before Waden, to earn 20-plus kills in a match, having done so versus Davidson last season.
Stamatis currently leads the SEC after picking up her sixth double-double of the season with an MSU-career-high 45 assists and 19 digs.
Match One | Mississippi State 3, Jackson State 0
After Thursday, State still has not lost a single set to Jackson State since 1986.
Gabby Waden (10 kills), Amarrah Cooks (7) and Alleah Stamatis (7) combined for 24 kills on 42 attempts without error for a .571 combined hitting percentage. As a team, MSU hit at a .375 mark, its best all season.
First Set (Mississippi State 25, Jackson State 7)
State cruised to an 18-point first-set win over the Tigers. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 7-1 lead to start and never looked back. Sophomore Paige Shaw opened the match with six kills in the first set.

After Jackson State opened the set with the first two points, State replied with six of its own. The Tigers came within two, but State held its ground for another convincing set victory.
Third Set (Mississippi State 25, Jackson State 16)
State jumped out to an early 3-0 set lead, but the Bulldogs didn't run away with the final set immediately. A 4-0 JSU run got the Tigers within one at 11-10, but the MSU maintained its lead. Up 12-11, Waden put down back-to-back kills and State closed from there.
Match Two | Mississippi State 3, North Florida 2
Despite losing the first set and falling 7-1 to start the fifth set, Mississippi State grinded its way to its 10th win of the 2019 season.
Waden's 24 kills, Robinson's 11 blocks and Stamatis' double-double highlighted the stat sheet for MSU.
First Set (North Florida 25, Mississippi State 17)
State took a 9-8 lead and a 13-12 lead but was never able to build on them as the Ospreys opened the match with an emphatic first set performance.
Second Set (Mississippi State 25, North Florida 17)
The Dawgs responded well with a 3-0 run that turned into an 11-1 lead after four-straight blocks put points on the board for the Bulldogs. UNF couldn't recover, and State tied the match at one apiece.
Third Set (Mississippi State 30, North Florida 28)
North Florida had set point at 24-21 before a 4-0 run turned the tables and put State in position to go up 2-1. The two team traded points until consecutive Osprey attacking errors gave MSU victory, in a thrilling 30-28 finish.
Fourth Set (North Florida 26, Mississippi State 24)
With UNF up 24-23, State once again tied the frame with set point looming. However, UNF's Taryn Griffey put together a kill and a block to send the match to five sets.
Fifth Set (Mississippi State 15, North Florida 10)
State rallied a 7-1 scoring run to tie the match at 8-8. UNF once again took the lead, 9-8, but four-straight MSU points behind it gave the Bulldogs a 12-9 advantage. State held the Ospreys from there, and won the set 15-10 to take the match.
