Soccer Closes Non-Conference Schedule on Sunday

STARKVILLE – For the third time this year, Mississippi State's soccer team will host a ranked non-conference opponent on Sunday in an early 11:30 a.m. CT kickoff against No. RV/18 Boston College on SEC Network+.
Fans are invited to Brunch with the Bulldogs as free cinnamon buns and iced coffee will be available while supplies last. The team will also be available to sign autographs following the match.
"There is no better way to finish our non-conference schedule than to have the opportunity to play another unbeaten ranked team in front of our home fans," head coach James Armstrong said. "The players are excited for the challenge"
Boston College opened the season with six consecutive victories for the second year in a row, but played to a 1-1 draw against Providence in the Eagles' last match. Prior to last year, the Eagles had not won their first six matches since the 2009 campaign.
Neither team has ever won a match against the opponent's conference. MSU is 0-2-0 against the ACC with losses to Virginia Tech and North Carolina. Both programs were ranked at the time. Boston College is 0-2-0 against the SEC with losses to Georgia and Vanderbilt.
The Bulldog seniors will play the final regular-season, non-conference match of their careers, a situation that they have had great success in over the past four years. Since the start of 2016, State has lost just four non-conference games with the exception of postseason play. Three of those matchups were against ranked opponents.
MSU's senior class is tied with four other SEC teams for the most non-conference wins in that span (24), and boast the second-highest winning percentage behind only South Carolina.
State's defense continues to be a tough test for opponents. In their last matchup the Bulldogs held South Alabama, which ranked 10th nationally in shots per game, to just eight shots with two on goal despite playing down a player for 70 minutes following a red card. MSU has held four opponents to fewer than 10 shots and has held each of the last five to 15 attempts or fewer.
Because she drew a red card in the last match, MSU will be without graduate goalkeeper Gabby English, who entered the weekend as the fifth-most experienced keeper in the nation with 6,175 minutes played. The Bulldogs will now have to start a freshman in net for the first time since 2015.
Conference play will open on Thursday, Sept. 19 when the Bulldogs host No. 12/9 Texas A&M. Kickoff on SEC Network+ is set for 7 p.m.
