STARKVILLE – Mississippi State soccer dropped a 2-0 decision to No. RV/18 Boston College in Starkville on Sunday afternoon.
The Bulldogs fall to 5-3-0 to close the non-conference schedule. Their only losses this year have come to ranked teams.
"Any game in the SEC is a tough game, and we felt like the teams we have played have definitely prepared us for that." Armstrong said. "We lost to three ranked teams here which is obviously disappointing, but we have learned from each and every single one. The teams that we have lost to are going to have a great season, and we are confident of that. It is all about the lessons we can learn, and we have got to learn quickly."
For the first time since 2015, a freshman started in goal for State. Katie Moore made four saves while playing the duration of the match.
State's back line held the Eagles scoreless in the first half. Boston College managed just four shots, putting only two on frame. The Eagles got their best look of the half in the 31st minute when Olivia Vaughn broke free down the right side of the box. She was set for a one-on-one shot with the goalkeeper before sophomore Andrea Tyrrell made a sliding block.
Hailey Farrington-Bentil had a chance to score for the Bulldogs in the 50th minute, but her breakaway shot was just inches outside the right post. Moments later, Boston College nearly scored with a ball that hit the left post on the other end of the field.
Midway through the second half, Vaughn opened the scoring after slipping behind the Bulldog defense for a one-on-one chance against Moore in the 67th minute. Jillian Jennings picked up an assist.
In the 75th minute, the Eagles' Francesca Venezia put a difficult shot on target that forced Moore to make an impressive diving save to her left, but she couldn't hold onto the rebound. Boston College's Emily Langenderfer pounced on the loose ball to score the second goal of the match.
The Bulldogs took nine shots, led by Farrington-Bentil's three attempts. State's defense caught Boston College offsides three times and posted a season-low one foul for the match.
MSU remains at home next week to open SEC play against Texas A&M on Thursday, Sept. 19. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT on the SEC Network+.
