JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Mississippi State volleyball swept Sam Houston State on Friday, September 13, to cap a split doubleheader day at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
The Bulldogs fought Stetson into five sets Friday morning in just its first loss of the season, before bouncing back to take down Sam Houston State in straight sets on the first day of the Gamecock Classic.
"What a day for the Dawgs," MSU volleyball head coach Julie Darty said. "This was a crazy day and I'm so proud of our response in the second match.
"We didn't feel like ourselves this morning against Stetson. It was an emotionally intense match, and Stetson was ready and well-prepared for us. We didn't handle the ball like we needed to and weren't as efficient from the pins as we need to be. We did such a great job of coming together and responding against Sam Houston State."
Deja Robinson was solid all day up front for Mississippi State, collecting 22 total kills on the day and converting them efficiently with a .515 hitting percentage. The sophomore added 10 total blocks to her ledger.
Senior Alleah Stamatis and freshman Katie Culumovic split setter duties between matches. Each picked up a double-double. For Stamatis, it was her fourth of the season, while Culumovic earned her first-career double-double.
Culumovic became the fourth Bulldog to earn a double-double this season, and the second MSU freshman to do so.
"Katie did a wonderful job stepping into the setter position," Darty said. "We had a ton of freshmen out on the court today, and they gained a lot of great experience. We stayed composed and trusted one another, and I'm so proud of this team. We are taking it one day at a time and take every opportunity to compete as a chance to improve."
