STARKVILLE – After picking up a red card in the 20th minute, Mississippi State shutout South Alabama to claim a 1-0 victory on Thursday night.
Monigo Karnley scored the game-winning goal off a header in the 46th minute. Niejia Watkins served a ball into the box where Karnley flicked the ball up and over the goalkeeper to open the scoring.
"Clearly this game was all about responding from the disappointment of the other night," head coach James Armstrong said. "We wanted to show the character and the heart and the commitment and the grit that this group of young ladies have. We started off well."
MSU had allowed just one shot that was wide of the net when goalkeeper Gabby English was forced to come out and make a sliding tackle on a misplayed pass. She was sent off with a red card, and freshman Katie Moore replaced her in the net.
"We started off exactly how we wanted to and then we made a silly mistake and found ourselves down to ten players for 70 minutes, so even more important for us to respond in a positive manner," Armstrong said. "The girls were tremendous. You just look at it in the second half, we out shot them. We battled hard. We denied them opportunities at goal. Couldn't be prouder of the response this group showed. It was a true team effort."
The Bulldog defense held the Jaguars to just eight total shots. South Alabama entered the match averaging 20.2 shots per game, which ranked 10th in the nation. Moore saved both of South Alabama's two shots on goal.
State fired 11 shots, including four from Zakirah McGillivary and three from MaKayla Waldner. The Bulldogs committed just six fouls on the night, marking their third straight match with 10 or fewer fouls.
MSU will host No. RV/18 Boston College on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. The match will air on SEC Network+.
