Bulldogs Complete Road Trip Sweep with 2-1 Win at Idaho

MOSCOW, Idaho – Two Mississippi State players scored their first career goals as the Bulldogs downed Idaho, 2-1, on the road on Sunday.
With the win, MSU improves to 3-1 on the year, and head coach James Armstrong becomes just the second Bulldog head coach to win three of his first four games.
"Coming into the game, we knew they were going to be a really strong opponent, but we came out controlling the tempo, which is what we wanted," head coach James Armstrong said. "We kept the ball and moved off the ball, so we're really happy with that."
MSU dominated the opening half, putting eight shots on frame to the Vandals' one. In the 15th minute, Miranda Carrasco sent a cross into the box where Monigo Karnley headed it on target. The keeper made the save, trying to push the ball away to her right, but Andrea Tyrrell pounced on the rebound for her first career goal.
As the half drew to a close, State again scored on a rebound chance. After diving to stop Zakirah McGillivary's shot from roughly 20 yards out, the keeper couldn't get back to the ball in time. Hailey Farrington-Bentil was waiting just off the far post to tap home the first goal of her career.
The Vandals battled back in the second half, forcing Gabby English to make five saves in the period. In the 47th minute, she was forced to face a Vandal one-on-one from the right side of the box, and made a reactionary kick save on what was Idaho's best chance until the final minute.
In the 89th minute, Idaho earned a free kick from midfield. After the Bulldogs failed to clear the service, the Vandals' Myah Merino picked up a loose ball and beat English with six seconds to play.
"Idaho was always fighting. They made a couple of adjustments, their coach did a great job with that, that really caused us some problems at the end. Disappointed to lose the goal, but obviously they had chances to score. Our keeper made six saves on the day, which is important. We're overall very happy with the performance."
The Bulldogs return home next week to open a six-match homestand. MSU will host UT-Martin on Thursday, Sept. 5 with kickoff set for 7 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.
