STARKVILLE – MaKayla Waldner scored in the 39th minute, and Mississippi State never looked back as the Bulldogs cruised to a 3-0 win against UT-Martin on Thursday night.
Waldner took a sharp-angled shot from the left side of the box, beating the keeper low and off the inside of the far post to open the scoring. The goal would hold up as the game-winner to give Waldner the 10th of her career, breaking the Bulldogs' career record set by Meredith Riekert (1995-98).
"She's a great ambassador, always has been," head coach James Armstrong said. "She's one of the hardest working players I've ever had the privilege to coach, and I know she's been waiting to break that record. So, we're looking forward to her getting even more goals moving forward, but really proud of her and its great for the program."
State came out even stronger after the break. Waldner found the net again just 33 seconds after the kickoff. Monigo Karnley posted up near the net and passed the ball back to a waiting Waldner at the penalty spot where she fired it home.
Within the first six minutes of the second half, the Bulldogs had already surpassed their shot total from the opening 45 minutes. MSU finished with 17 second-half shots.
"Obviously, the first half was a little disappointing," Armstrong said. "We were a little slow, a little flat, but came out really well in the second half obviously getting that early goal. It really settled us down, and I thought we dominated possession, we dominated attacking chances in the second half and our back line did a great job defensively with shutting down any threat they may have had."
In the 65th minute, Waldner came inches away from a hat trick as her shot beat everything but the left post. As the game wound down, Olivia Hernandez and Megan Mielke put together a great combination of passes to find Karnley all alone with the goalkeeper. Karnley took a short shot and leapt over the sliding keeper for her first career goal to result in the final score.
The Skyhawks had just two shots for the match and neither was on target. Gabby English recorded her third shutout and fourth win on the year.
With two goals, Waldner moved into sole possession of second place in MSU's career record book with 23 total goals. It was her fourth multi-goal game, which also ranks second in school history.
The Bulldogs will host No. 18/RV Memphis on Sunday, Sept. 8 with kickoff set for 7 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.
