PEBBLE BEACH, California – Senior Peng Pichaikool delivered a 3-under-69 in Friday's opening round of the Carmel Cup for the second consecutive year at the Pebble Beach Golf Links.
Fresh off his Singha Championship victory last weekend, Pichaikool collected five birdies on the day to finish in a four-way tie for fifth place. He did his damage with a trio of birdies on the Par 4s, while his 2-under score line on the Par 4s is tied for second among the tournament field.
Pichaikool started off hot with a pair of birdies though his first four holes. He added another birdie on the ninth hole to finish off his front nine at 3-under par.
After consecutive bogeys on 11 and 12, Pichaikool responded with back-to-back birdies on 14 and 15 before playing even through the final three holes.
"Peng did a fantastic job of carrying the team today," MSU men's golf coach Dusty Smith said. "It was really nice to see these guys out there competing again. I thought early on we did a good job of attacking the golf course. We had all six guys in the round through about seven holes."
"The middle of the golf course is very demanding," Smith continued. "You have to be disciplined and tough enough to work your way around it. We need to do a better job tomorrow of just cleaning up our rounds. We had too many simple mistakes today that cost us some shots on the back nine. It's important that we continue to focus on us and playing to our standard."
Senior Garrett Johnson, sophomore Ford Clegg and freshman Hunter Logan turned in 3-over-75s. The trio accounted for a combined seven birdies on the front nine but were limited to one birdie over the final nine holes. Junior Austin Fulton notched a 4-over-76 to round out MSU's team scorecard.
As a team, Mississippi State collected a 10-over 370 to sit in sixth place ahead of SEC opponent Vanderbilt and TCU. The Bulldogs will look to bolt up the leaderboard during Saturday's second round and enter the day five strokes back of Oklahoma State for fifth place.
Oklahoma leads the field after shooting an 11-under-349. The Sooners' Garett Reband, the event's defending champion, sits atop the player leaderboard at 7-under.
State is in the first group to tee off from the first hole. Freshman William Wann will be the first Bulldog off at 9 a.m. CT. Live stats will be available on Golfstat.com.
