PEBBLE, BEACH, California – Mississippi State seniors Garrett Johnson and Peng Pichaikool put together solid second rounds on Saturday at the 2019 Carmel Cup on the Pebble Beach Golf Links.
The duo had success at the Carmel Cup both finishing in the top 15 on the individual leaderboard last season.
"Garrett and Peng did a nice job of giving us some under par rounds," head Coach Dusty Smith said. "I was pleased in how we handled ourselves out there today."
Johnson had a strong start to his round going four-under through six holes. He also birdied 10 and finished the day at two-under 70 to match his second round score at Pebble Beach last year.
Collectively, the Bulldogs dominated the front nine of the historic par-72, 6,828-yard course and shot six-under as a squad.
"We did a really good job of coming out of the gates quick today," head Coach Dusty Smith said. "We had a lot of momentum early in the round. We lost some shots on the back 9 which ultimately cost us a chance for a great round."
"We need to continue to focus on the small details and make sure we have the right focus on every single shot. Tomorrow is another opportunity and we need to take advantage of it."
State finished the second round with four Bulldogs shooting even or better which included Pichaikool. He had back-to-back birdies on holes two and three and added another on hole five. He enters the final day tied for 10th place after posting four-under on the individual leaderboard.
Freshman Hunter Logan contributed an even-par score after a birdie on hole 11. The Bulldogs currently sit seventh but are within one stroke of TCU and Oklahoma State from the Big 12, who are tied for fifth place on the team leaderboard.
Junior Austin Fulton started his day with birdies on holes two and four. He ended the day with a two-over par 74.
Oklahoma continues to lead the field after shooting an 11-under on Saturday and a combined 21-under after the first two rounds. The Sooners' Garett Reband, the event's defending champion, sits atop the player leaderboard at 16-under.
For the final round of the 2019 Carmel Cup State will be first to tee off from hole one at 9 a.m. CT. Freshman William Wann will lead the group and scores will be updated courtesy of Golfstat.com.
