CHENEY, Wash. – Mississippi State soccer has headed west for the first match of a two-game road trip over Labor Day weekend. The Bulldogs will kick off at Eastern Washington at 6 p.m. CT on Friday night with the match available to be streamed on WatchBigSky.com/Pluto TV Channel 534.
The Bulldogs left Starkville on Wednesday night to begin their journey to the Rockies and arrived in Cheney, Washington, on Thursday morning. State will remain in Cheney following Friday's match, but will make the short drive across the state line on Sunday for its second match of the trip against Idaho.
"We're really excited to be here and looking forward to playing a very good Eastern Washington team," head coach James Armstrong said. "For us, the focus is just improving on both sides of the ball from our last game. We'll try to score a few goals and keep a clean sheet come tomorrow."
MSU is coming off a narrow loss to then No. RV/22 BYU. The Cougars, now ranked No. 14/14, picked up a goal on a free kick in the 85th minute to break the tie and claim a 2-1 victory. It took a diving save on Monigo Karnley's final shot at the horn to deny State extra time against BYU.
Niah Johnson scored off a penalty kick, becoming the fourth Bulldog to find the net through two games. Seven different players have picked up a point already this season. Last year, MSU had scored six times in the first two matches, but MaKayla Waldner had scored half of those and only six players were on the scoresheet.
The Bulldogs now turn their attention to an Eastern Washington team that was outscored, 5-3, on opening weekend. State's defense will look to get back on track after allowing 20 shots to the Cougars. MSU held opponents to a program-record 11.5 shots per game last season. Eastern Washington has averaged just 12.0 shots and 4.50 shots on goal over two games.
MSU and Idaho will kick off at 5 p.m. on Sunday evening in Moscow, Idaho. The match will be played in the Kibbie Dome, giving State a taste of indoor soccer, and will be streamed on WatchBigSky.com.

Fast Facts
- With two more career goals, MaKayla Waldner will move into a tie for second in MSU history. She needs one game-winner to tie the program record.
- Seven different players have already recorded a point this year, including three newcomers. Last year, just four newcomers picked up a point all season.
- The Bulldogs have played one Big Sky opponent in program history when they tied with Sacramento State, 0-0 (9/11/05).
- This will be the first time EWU meets an SEC opponent, though the Eagles lost to then-Big 12 member Missouri, 3-0, in 2008.
- Graduate Gabby English has started State's first two matches after transferring from San Diego State this season where she collected 19 career shutouts. She opened the year with another shutout against Alabama A&M.
- A win would mark the third straight year that the Bulldogs have been above .500 through three matches. Prior to 2017, State had gone three straight years without doing so.
- A win would also be MSU's first in the state of Washington and first against a member of the Big Sky Conference.
