CHENEY, Wash. – As she has so many times in her career, MaKayla Waldner struck early for Mississippi State as the Bulldogs defeated Eastern Washington on Friday.
Sophomore Monigo Karnley, making her first career start, found Waldner open on the left side of the box in the 15th minute. The senior from Dexter, Missouri, fired a shot into the lower right corner for the lone goal of the match.
The goal was the 21st of Waldner's career, moving her into fourth on State's all-time list. It was also the ninth game-winning goal of her career, which matches Meredith Riekert's school record set in 1995-98.
"I'm really proud of the girls' fight," head coach James Armstrong said. "That was a really, really tough team to play against, a physical contest. We showed lots of grit, lots of determination, and got the goal relatively early on. We dominated possession after that. Anytime you can go on the road and win against a good team is a bonus. Now, we're looking forward to improving for a very good Idaho team on Sunday."
Following Waldner's goal, the Bulldogs locked down on defense for a very physical final 75 minutes. The match saw a total of 37 fouls whistled, the most in an MSU game since Sept. 25, 2015, when the Bulldogs and Tennessee combined for 41 fouls.
Despite being narrowly outshot, 10-9, the Bulldogs controlled the ball for the majority of the match. State won five corners to Eastern Washington's three.
Graduate Gabby English earned her second shutout as a Bulldog while making five saves, all on shots from distance. State's defense returned to form, holding the opponent to 10 or fewer shots for the 12th time since the start of 2018.
Waldner led MSU with three shots, putting two on frame. Karnley also put two attempts on target, and AK Ward fired two shots.
The Bulldogs will now make the short trip across the state line to meet Idaho on Sunday. Kickoff against the Vandals is set for 5 p.m. CT from the Kibbie Dome, with the match streaming live on WatchBigSky.com.
