STARKVILLE – After competing in three events at the NCAA East Prelims last week, Mississippi State's Karson Kowalchuk has been selected to the Team Canada delegation for the World University Games in Napoli, Italy, this summer.
The event begins with the opening ceremony on July 3. The athletics portion of the event will run from July 8-13. More than 1,000 athletes will compete across 50 events.
The Bulldog junior joins Mississippi State's women's basketball team at the competition. Vic Schaefer's squad will represent the USA Team in Italy.
Kowalchuk is set to compete in the 100m and 200m and is an option for the 4x100m relay. His schedule begins on Monday, July 8, with the first and second rounds of the 100m. The semifinals and finals will be contested the following day.
The Markham, Ontario, native led State in the 200m this season, clocking a 20.81 at the Crimson Tide Invitational where he also placed second in the 100m. His season best on the straightaway was a wind-aided 10.35 at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
Competition in the 200m begins on Wednesday, July 10. The semifinals and finals will be run on Thursday, July 11. In 1979, the 200m world record was set in World University Games competition. That mark stood until 1996.
