JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Sarah Blake and Logan Boss were the first athletes from Mississippi State to earn their spot in the NCAA Outdoor Championships with their performances at the NCAA East Prelims on Thursday.
Blake opened the day for the Bulldogs, finishing sixth in the women's javelin with a throw of 51.33m (168-5). It will be her third consecutive appearance at the Championships. Boss finished tied for fourth in the high jump, clearing 1.80m (5-10.75). It will also be Boss' third career appearance.
On the track, State advanced nine of 10 athletes to tomorrow's quarterfinals, including all of its entries in the men's and women's 800m and a pair of men's 100m runners.
"That was a great first day for us," interim head coach Chris Woods said. "We need to keep our energy high going into tomorrow. This meet is all about beating the person in front of you to keep moving on. It's time to compete. We did a great job of that today and put ourselves in position to achieve our goals."
Riley White opened the running events on an emphatic note, taking second in her heat of the 400m hurdles to automatically advance. White clocked in just 0.08 seconds off the MSU school record and moved into second place by just one-thousandth of a second. Her run of 58.37 put her in sixth place.
On the men's side, Rasheed Tatham finished 12th in the 400m hurdles, running 51.07 and advancing with a second-place finish in his heat. Malcum Tatum advanced on time, finishing in a season-best 51.15.
Lester Miller ran 10.41 in the 100m hurdles and was second in his heat to automatically qualify for the quarterfinals. Karson Kowalchuk, running into the stiffest headwind of the day, clocked in at 10.42 and advanced on time.
To close the night, all four Bulldogs running the 800m advanced. Alon Lewis ran the fourth-fastest time of the day and No. 4 in school history at 2:04.98. Charlotte Cayton-Smith, who was previously fourth in school history, advanced on time by finishing 19th with a time of 2:06.07.
For the men, Dejon Devroe placed seventh and won his heat in 1:50.08. Marco Arop was second in his heat, crossing the line in 1:50.49.
Those that advanced will run in quarterfinals on Friday to earn their way to the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, in two weeks. Kowalchuk will return to the track in the first round of the 200m as well.
Bulldogs will also look to punch their tickets in the men's javelin, women's pole vault and men's and women's 3000m steeplechase tomorrow.
