Lexington, Ken. – In lieu of a strong comeback effort from Mississippi State's women's tennis squad (12-11, 3-7 SEC), 26th-ranked Kentucky (17-5, 7-4) ousted the Bulldogs 4-2 on Sunday indoors at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex.
In doubles action, State's 57th-ranked Magda Adaloglou and Tamara Racine were set back 6-1 by Kentucky's 18th ranked Justina Milkuskyte and Akvile Parazinskaite on court one. MSU's pairing of Emma Antonaki and Anastasia Rentouli then overturned Diana Tkachenko and Tiphanie Fiquet 6-1 to even things up.
After going up 3-0 to start, the Bulldogs' Janina Braun and Sara Lizariturry ultimately fell to UK's duo of Lesedi Jacobs and Anastasia Tkachenko 6-3, handing the Wildcats the early 1-0 lead. It was only the second setback of the season for the MSU tandem, now 11-2 in dual matches.
Due to the inclimate weather, the match was played on Kentucky's four-court, indoor facility. The top four positions competed in singles first, with the fifth and sixth matches following.
Despite a strong effort to start the first set, State's 67th-ranked Antonaki was ultimately ousted by the 16th-ranked Wildcat Mikulskyte 6-3, 6-2 at the top position, putting the Wildcats up 2-0 in the match. UK's Parazinskaite then downed State's rookie Racine 6-3, 6-3 on court four for a 3-0 Kentucky advantage.
Almost simultaneously, MSU cut the lead to 3-2 with straight-set victories on courts two and three. At No. 2, the Bulldog senior Rentouli ousted Kentucky's Jacobs in 6-2, 6-4 fashion, cutting the deficit to 3-1. On court three, State's Adaloglou held off the Wildcats' Fiquet 6-4, 6-3, making it a one-point match. For Rentouli, it was the senior's fifth win in a row as she improved to a remarkable 22-5 overall in singles this year, 13-1 in dual match play.
With the first four courts concluded, the final two matches began on courts five and six, both must-win situations for the Bulldogs. On court five, MSU's Braun was edged 6-4, 6-3 by Diane Tkachenko, clinching the match for the Wildcats despite the strong rally attempt by State.
The final match at No. 6 was suspended with UK's Anastasia Tkachenko up a set on the Bulldogs' Lizariturry, and trailing in the second, 6-2, 3-4.
Next Up For MSU…
The Bulldogs return home to the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre for the final weekend of regular season, dual-match play. State will host Texas A&M at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 12, and LSU on Sunday, April 14, at a 1 p.m., both as part of the highly-anticipated Super Bulldog Weekend festivities.
