Starkville, Miss. – In light of forecasted severe weather in Starkville Friday, Mississippi State's women's tennis squad opened the final weekend of regular season action against 16th-ranked Texas A&M on Thursday evening. The Bulldogs (12-12, 3-9 SEC) were downed 4-2 by the Aggies (20-5, 8-4) at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre, but not without putting up a strong fight after dropping the doubles point.
Texas A&M came out swinging in doubles. On court one, the Aggies' 28th-ranked tandem of Tatiana Makarova and Jayci Goldsmith ousted MSU's 66th-ranked Magda Adaloglou and Tamara Racine 6-1. State's Janina Braun and Meredith Roberts then fell 6-3 to TAMU's Riley McQuaid and Lucia Quiterio on court three. The court two matchup between the Bulldog tandem of Emma Antonaki and Anastasia Rentouli and A&M's Renee McBryde and Kaya Townsend was suspended with State trailing 5-3.
In singles, the Bulldogs jumped on the Aggies early, ultimately taking four of the six first sets to try a stage a comeback. On court six, State's newcomer Roberts was downed by Quiterio 6-0, 6-2, putting the Aggies up 2-0 early in the match.
But State notched straight-set victories in the next two matches off the court to even the match at 2-2. The MSU senior Braun completed a spirited 6-3, 6-3 ousting of A&M's McQuaid at the No. 5 position. MSU's true freshman Racine then took the No. 4 matchup by the same score over the Aggies' McBryde to tie up the match.
The Aggies responded, with Makarova taking court three from State's Adaloglou 6-3, 6-2 for a 3-2 lead.
The final two matches of the day – at the top two positions – were both in third sets at that point with MSU needing both to pull off the upset. After dropping the first set, A&M's 62nd-ranked Goldsmith battled back to down MSU's Rentouli 0-6, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 to clinch the win for the Aggies. It was only the second setback of the season (13-2) in Rentouli's outstanding 2019 senior campaign.
The remaining match on court one between MSU's 65th-ranked Antonaki and the Aggies' 50th-ranked Townsend was abandoned with Townsend leading 1-6, 6-4, 5-4 in the third set.
Next Up For MSU…
State is now set to close out the 2019 regular season at 1 p.m. CT on Sunday at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre, hosting the 28th-ranked LSU Tigers as part of the final day of Super Bulldog Weekend. The homestanding Bulldogs will be celebrating Janina Braun and Anastasia Rentouli for Senior Day.
