State’s Rentouli, Antonaki Garner All-SEC Honors
April 24, 2019 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – After successful campaigns on the court in 2019, Mississippi State women's tennis players Anastasia Rentouli and Emma Antonaki have earned All-Southeastern Conference honors, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Both players were named All-SEC Second Team, while Antonaki was also named to the league's All-Freshman squad.
"This is a great and well deserved honor for Ana and Emma," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "Their talent, hard work and conference wins earned them this award. The SEC is consistently the strongest conference in the nation in women's tennis."
It marks the second-straight Second Team nod for the senior Rentouli, whose remarkable four-year career comes to a close this spring. Rentouli saved her best season for last, going 24-6 overall in singles and an incredible 15-2 in dual matches, 6-1 in the SEC.
Rentouli's All-SEC selection comes on the heels of her also being named the SEC's 2019 Women's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The Athens, Greece, native stands fourth all-time at State in overall career victories (150), second in singles wins (87) and tied for third in doubles wins (63). More impressively, she is on pace to finish in the top 5 all-time at State for winning percentage in all three of those categories.
"Ana finishes her career as one of the most decorated players in the SEC and certainly in the history of our program," Greenan continued. "I am very thankful for her contributions to Bulldog Tennis over the past four years."
The true freshman Antonaki has registered an outstanding first season a Bulldog. Also a product of Athens, she is 25-12 in singles and 20-13 in doubles. She notched an impressive 17-7 dual match singles record as a rookie, playing all of her matches at the top two positions in State's lineup. She was 6-5 in SEC play with five ranked wins.
Currently ranked 59th in the country in singles, Antonaki has eight wins over nationally-ranked foes overall in 2018-19, three in the top 40. As just a rookie, she is in position to possibly secure a bid to the 2019 NCAA Singles Championship, which will be held May 20-25 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
"Our future also looks bright with Emma leading our returning class," Greenan stated. "She is only the second player we've had to make the SEC All-Freshman team and we feel like she will earn many more SEC honors in the future."
Antonaki and Rentouli, who have also played doubles together the entire spring season for the Bulldogs, swept the SEC's weekly honors on March 6, Rentouli earning Player of the Week honors and Antonaki Freshman of the Week.
