GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Awards keep coming in for Mississippi State's Nuno Borges, as the senior sensation has added another SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, the league office announced on Friday morning prior to the Bulldogs' SEC Championship quarterfinal match against Vanderbilt.
The honor is the second in a row for the two-time reigning SEC Player of the Year, marking only the second time in conference history that a player has won multiple Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards. Borges is the only player in league men's tennis history to earn both Player and Scholar-Athlete honors in a career.
"Nuno has been absolutely incredible for us this season," head coach Matt Roberts said. "He continues to be a great example of what being a student athlete here at MSU is all about. He leads by example and does a great job being accountable with his teammates. He's extremely deserving of this honor and I'm so proud of him."
Borges owns an impressive 3.89 cumulative grade-point average as a kinesiology major, concentrating in clinical exercise physiology. He is the second Bulldog to earn the honor and the first to do so twice.
In his final regular season as a Bulldog, Borges is the first Bulldog in the modern era (since before 1969) to go undefeated during regular season dual match play. He has done so playing all his matches at the No. 1 position against the top talent in college tennis.
Owning an overall singles mark of 27-2 for 2018-19 entering Friday's match against the Commodores, the second-ranked Borges has only dropped three sets in his 22 dual singles matches, only one in SEC play. Two of those three matches that went to third sets went unfinished. He will also enter the postseason riding a streak of 18 sets won.
In doubles, Borges holds a 20-7 overall ledger, including a remarkable 15-4 mark in dual match play alongside Rakic at the No. 1 position with a 9-2 record in SEC action.
With the remainder of his senior season left to play, Borges continues to climb up the Bulldog men's tennis wins charts. While already claiming the No. 1 spot in career doubles pairing wins (54 with Rakic), total dual match wins (129) and dual match singles wins (76), he is one win away from tying for the top spot in overall wins (176) and singles wins (111).
In dual match doubles wins, Borges currently sits fifth all-time in career dual match doubles wins (53), just one behind fellow senior Niclas Braun. Borges' 65 doubles wins is just four shy of tying for 10th in program history.
