Peters Remains on The Bowerman Watchlist at Midseason

STARKVILLE, Miss. – World leader in the javelin Anderson Peters remains on the watchlist for The Bowerman, collegiate track and field's highest honor, at the midway point of the outdoor season.
The Bowerman was created in 2009 and is given annually to the top male and female athlete in track and field by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Peters finished as a semifinalist for the award in 2018 and was MSU's first ever semifinalist.
Peters broke his own Grenadian national record with the longest throw in the world this season, tossing the implement 86.07m (282-4). His mark ranks third in NCAA history and is nearly 10m farther than teammate and national No. 2 Curtis Thompson (77.54m, 254-5).
The St. Andrew, Grenada, native boasts 11 of the top 25 marks in college history. Six of those throws have come in just two meets of competition this season.
"I can't think of a better kid that should be recognized for this award," interim head coach Chris Woods said. "Anderson exemplifies everything I think The Bowerman stands for, which is leadership, athleticism and a competitive nature. It's a testament to his hard work and everything he puts into his sport."
As a freshman, Peters captured the NCAA javelin title in June with a meet-record toss of 82.82m (217-9) on his third throw in Eugene, Oregon.
In 2018, he captured the javelin crown at the 2018 NACAC Championships and earning bronze at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Of the 19 prior winners, seven have gone on to become Olympians. The men's winner has come from the SEC in four of the past five years.
No thrower has ever won the award, though multi-event athlete and Olympian Ashton Eaton – who holds the world record in both the outdoor decathlon and indoor heptathlon – claimed it in 2010.
