Strong First Round Has Women's Golf Tied For Sixth At SEC Championship

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sophomore Blair Stockett led the way for Mississippi State on Wednesday at the 2019 SEC Women's Golf Championship, shooting a 1-under 71 and helping the Bulldogs tie for sixth place after the first round at the Greystone Golf and Country Club.
State recorded a 6-over 294 and is joined in sixth place by Tennessee. Florida and Auburn sit atop the leaderboard at 4-under 284. Stockett's solid efforts have her inside the top 10 at tied for sixth.
"I am super proud of our performance today," MSU head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. "We stuck to our process and that has put us in a great position. You cannot win an event the first day, but you can put yourself in a solid position for the last two rounds."
Sophomore Aubree Jones and junior Ela Grimwood also had a strong performances for the Bulldogs. Each finished 2-over 74 and Jones carded a team-high four birdies.
In her SEC Championship debut, freshman Hannah Levi shot a 3-over 75 in the opening round.
"The greens are tough here at the Greystone Legacy course," Brown-Lemm said. "They are firm and fast, we did a great job at rolling the ball close."
Second round play begins Thursday morning with tee times for the Bulldogs beginning at 8 a.m. CT. State will be paired with Ole Miss and Vanderbilt.
"The next objective is to play tomorrow, nothing different than today. One hole at a time, one shot at a time," Brown-Lemm said.
The 2019 SEC Championship marks the second consecutive year in which the event extends four days, with Match Play on Saturday and Sunday. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday consist of three rounds of stroke play. The final round on Sunday will be shown to a national audience on SEC Network.
