MSU's Rentouli Named 2019 SEC Women’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year
April 17, 2019 | Women's Tennis
College Station, Texas - The 2019 SEC women's tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year was announced Wednesday by the conference office. The award was presented to Mississippi State's Anastasia Rentouli as part of the conference tournament. Rentouli is the first Bulldog to earn the honor in women's tennis since it began in 2004.
Rentouli has become one of the most successful Bulldog student-athletes ever. The senior holds an outstanding cumulative 3.97 GPA in her pursuit of a double major in finance and marketing. To date, she is a three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll (2016, 2017, 2018) member, three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete (2016, 2017, 2018), and was named CoSIDA/Google Cloud Academic All-District VI In 2018.
Off the court, Rentouli is a three-time SEC Community Service Team member (2017, 2018, 2019), and she has served MSU and the community through countless hours of service. She has given her time to Special Olympics, Veterans 5K, Domestic Violence Awareness month, Boys and Girls Club Fall Festival, MLK Day of Service. Rentouli has been as an integral member of the MSU Student M-Club during her career, including serving as President in 2018-19. She is also the MSU campus involvement chair for SAAC.
In April 2019, she received a Spirit of State award, which formally honors those Mississippi State students who have excelled in campus involvement, service to the university, and have made an impact on their peers and the broader campus community. In 2018, she received both of the ITA Southern Region's sportsmanship awards – the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sportsmanship & Leadership Award as well as the Cissy Leary Sportsmanship Award.
On the court, the Athens, Greece, native has unquestionably been equally impressive. Rentouli currently stands fourth all-time at MSU in total career victories (149), second in singles wins (86) and tied for third in doubles wins (63). More impressively, she is also on pace to finish in the top 5 all-time at State for winning percentage in all three of those categories.
Major highlights of Rentouli's career have included winning the first 10 singles matches of her career, being ranked as high as 36th nationally in singles, and a five-match win streak in the heart of 2018 SEC action. As part of that streak - on March 15, 2018 in Starkville - Rentouli earned a relentless three-set, comeback victory over Vanderbilt's 98th-ranked Amanda Meyer, clinching State's 4-3 upset victory of the second-ranked Commodores, the highest-ranked victory in MSU tennis history (men or women). She has also helped lead MSU to three-consecutive NCAA bids.
Rentouli has saved possibly her best season for her last. In her final campaign, State's steadfast senior is 23-6 overall in singles, 17-12 in doubles. That includes a stellar 14-2 dual-match singles record, 6-1 in the SEC. The 2018 All-SEC selection leads State in overall singles winning percentage (23-6, .793) and dual match singles winning percentage (14-2, .875) this season.
