MSU’s Arop, Horsford Earn SEC Weekly Honors

STARKVILLE – Two Mississippi State men's track and field athletes have been recognized for hot starts this week.
Fresh off his first race of the outdoor season, Marco Arop was named the SEC Men's Co-Runner of the Week by the conference office. Tyriq Horsford joined him as the SEC Men's Co-Freshman of the Week as he continues to build a strong first season in Starkville.
It is just the second time that the Bulldogs have seen two athletes earn conference honors in the same week and the first since April 14, 2004.
Arop, who shared the week's honor with Quincy Hall of South Carolina, won the 800m at the Crimson Tide Invitational in 1:45.50. That was just 0.25 seconds shy of his personal best that he ran to finish second at the NCAA Outdoor Championships last year.
His first run landed him at No. 1 in the NCAA and No. 2 in the world this season. He pulled teammates Daniel Nixon and Dejon Devroe along to create a 1-2-3 finish, and the Bulldogs now hold the Nos. 1, 2 and 5 times in the NCAA this year.
Horsford added his name to growing list of MSU throwers to launch a javelin 70m or farther. He broke his personal-best with a 70.95m (232-9) throw to place second behind only teammate Curtis Thompson.
Horsford now holds the fifth-best mark in the event in the SEC and is 15th nationally. He is the eighth-youngest man in the world to throw 70m this season. The Trinidad and Tobago native beat the third collegiate finisher by more than 4m.
"We are extremely proud of Marco and Tyriq's performances this weekend," interim head coach Chris Woods said. "It's great that we are earning all the mid-season awards and recognition. However, it is important that we stay the course and remain focused on our long term team goals."
MSU returns to action in three meets this week. A crop of distance runners including Arop will travel to California on Wednesday to compete at the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific University and the Mt. SAC Relays hosted by Mt. San Antonio College. The rest of the Bulldogs will head to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, for the LSU Alumni Gold on Saturday.
