STARKVILLE – For an SEC-leading third time in 2019, and the fifth time in his career, Mississippi State's Nuno Borges has been tabbed the SEC Men's Tennis Player of the Week.
The reigning two-time SEC Player of the Year earned the honor after going a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles in MSU's wins at No. 8 Texas A&M and No. 36 LSU, with both doubles triumphs serving as point-clinchers for the Maroon and White.
Borges, a two-time singles All-American, extended his winning streak to a career-long 20 matches after defeating the Aggies' 46th-ranked Juan Carlos Aguilar 6-3, 6-3 on Friday night in the Bulldogs' dominant 6-1 victory in College Station.
Prior to his singles triumph that gave State a 2-0 lead against Texas A&M, the Bulldogs' third ranked tandem of Borges and Strahinja Rakic posted a 6-1 ousting of the 10th-ranked Aggie duo of Aguilar and Barnaby Smith to clinch the doubles point.
On Sunday, Borges continued his stellar senior season, as he and Rakic clinched their team-best 10th doubles point with a 6-3 decision over LSU's Shane Monroe and Daniel Moreno. In singles against the Tigers, Borges cruised past Monroe 6-2, 6-3 to record his 21st-straight victory and finish the regular season undefeated in singles. Borges' streak ranks as the second-longest in program history.
In his final regular season as a Bulldog, Borges is the first Bulldog in the modern era (since before 1969) to go undefeated during regular season dual match play. He has done so playing all his matches at the No. 1 position against the top talent in college tennis.
Owning an overall singles mark of 27-2 for 2018-19, the second-ranked Borges has only dropped three sets in his 22 dual singles matches, only one in SEC play. Two of those three matches that went to third sets went unfinished. He will also enter the postseason riding a streak of 18 sets won.
In doubles, Borges holds a 20-7 overall ledger, including a remarkable 15-4 mark in dual match play alongside Rakic at the No. 1 position with a 9-2 record in SEC action.
With the remainder of his senior season left to play, Borges continues to climb up the Bulldog men's tennis wins charts. While already claiming the No. 1 spot in career doubles pairing wins (54 with Rakic), total dual match wins (129) and dual match singles wins (76), he is one win away from tying for the top spot in overall wins (176) and singles wins (111).
In dual match doubles wins, Borges currently sits fifth all-time in career dual match doubles wins (53), just one behind fellow senior Niclas Braun. Borges' 65 doubles wins is just four shy of tying for 10th in program history.
Next Up For MSU …
The Bulldogs return to the court at 11 a.m. CT on Friday in the quarterfinals of the SEC Championship, held at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Center in Gainesville, Florida. MSU, the No. 2 seed in the field after finishing 11-1 in league play, will face the winner of Thursday's match between seventh-seeded Kentucky and 10th-seeded Vanderbilt.
