MSU Women’s Tennis Upsets No. 28 LSU 4-3 In Senior Day Shootout

Starkville, Miss. – In the midst of a few minor rain delays early on, Mississippi State's women's tennis squad (13-12, 4-9 SEC) rallied from 3-0 down to upset 28th-ranked LSU (15-10, 5-8) 4-3 at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre Sunday. Seniors Anastasia Rentouli and Janina Braun were catalysts in the triumph.
"It was an epic senior day. We needed that win," said head coach Daryl Greenan. "The girls have been fighting so hard all year. They show up all year, whether they won or lost the last one."
The Tigers opened the match by dominating doubles, clinching matches on courts two and three to open the day. On court two, LSU's Anna Loughlan and Paris Corley pair overturned MSU's Emma Antonaki and Anastasia Rentouli 6-2.
State's Janina Braun and Meredith Roberts then fell 6-3 to Kennan Johnson and Taylor Bridges on court three. The final matchup between the Bulldogs 66th-ranked Magda Adaloglou and Tamara Racine and the Tigers' 14th-ranked Eden Richardson and Jessica Golovin was suspended, tied 5-5 at the top spot.
But the Bulldogs did not go away, earning four of six first sets off the bat and would ride ultimately claim victory in all four of those contests for the win.
LSU still held the upper hand to start, building a 3-0 lead. The Tigers' ninth-ranked Richardson ousted State's 65th-ranked true freshman Antonaki 6-4, 6-3 on court 1. Almost simultaneously, LSU's Corley downed State's Racine 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4.
Then the exciting Bulldog comeback began. MSU's Adaloglou picked up a much-needed triumph over the Tigers' Bridges, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 3 position to trim the LSU lead to 3-1.
On court two, State's standout senior Rentouli fought through to take a key first set on court 2 with a 7-6(1) decision. Rentouli then finished off the match to upset 59th-ranked Tiger Golovin 7-6(1), 6-3. The fourth-year senior improved to 14-2 overall in dual matches this season.
In another straight-set victory for MSU at No. 6, State's Roberts ousted LSU's Luba Vasilyuk 6-3, 6-4, tying the match 3-3 with all focus shifting to a third-set battle to decide the match on court five.
There, State's Braun had earned the first set over LSU's Loughlan in 6-4 fashion, but the Tiger foe took the second by the same score. Braun got a great start to the third with an early 4-1 lead. With both teams looking on from the neighboring court, the Bulldog senior persevered to win the set 6-3, clinching the Bulldogs' 4-3 upset.
"Coming back from down 3-0, winning the last four matches. You couldn't have scripted it any better," said Greenan. "I'm really proud of my girls. That's a huge win for us."
The Bulldogs concluded the regular season with a 10-2 record at home.
