March 04, 2019 | Women's Basketball
STARKVILLE – Teaira McCowan is the SEC's lone semifinalist for the Naismith Award, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced on Monday.
The Brenham, Texas, native is in the running for five additional major national awards including the Wade Trophy, Wooden Award, Lisa Leslie Award, Naismith Defensive Player of the Year and the Senior CLASS Award.
McCowan led State in scoring at 17.3 points per game, which ranked fourth in the SEC. She was key in the Bulldogs' rebounding efforts, ranking third in the nation with 13.4 rpg and leading the country on the offensive glass with six offensive rebounds per game. Her 65.4 percent field goal percentage is fourth nationally, and she is 19th in the country with 2.5 blocks per game.
The senior broke MSU's career rebounding record (1,404) and career double-doubles record (63) this season and tied the program's career victories record with her 126th win in yesterday's SEC title-clinching game.
The four finalists will be announced on March 22, 2019, and fans will have a chance to vote for their favorite player of the four beginning that same day through April 3, by visiting naismithtrophy.com/vote to cast their ballot. The fan vote will account for five percent of the overall vote.
The 2019 Citizen Naismith Trophy for Women's Player of the Year will be announced on April 6, 2019. The winner will be honored at her school on a later date.
MSU holds the No. 1 seed in this week's SEC Tournament and will have a double-bye. The Bulldogs begin play on Friday, March 8 at 11 a.m. CT on SEC Network against the winner of the No. 8 Tennessee/No. 9 LSU game.
