STARKVILLE – With their second consecutive SEC regular-season title in hand, Mississippi State would be a No. 2 seed in this year's NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament if the season ended today. The selection committee adjusted its top 16 teams tonight with State dropping to the second seed in the Albany region and sixth overall.
MSU (27-2, 15-1 SEC), which is ranked fifth in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll released today, is behind top-seeded UConn (27-2) in the Albany Regional. Defending champion Notre Dame (27-3), Baylor (27-1) and Louisville (27-2) round out the No. 1 seeds.
The Bulldogs won the SEC title outright on Sunday night with a 68-64 win at No. 15/14 South Carolina. The Gamecocks are No. 12 in the committee's rankings. The win was No. 126 of seniors Jazzmun Holmes and Teaira McCowan's careers, tying the program's all-time wins record set by last year's senior class.
Head coach Vic Schaefer's squad is the first women's team in MSU history to claim consecutive regular-season conference championships. State is 6-2 against top-30 teams in the RPI and is 3-1 against teams in the committee's ranking.
The Bulldogs are tied with UConn for the most wins in the country (97) since the start of the 2015-16 season. The two programs last met in the 2017 Final Four when MSU snapped the Huskies 111-game win streak with a 66-64 victory in overtime.
The first and second rounds of the 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship will be played March 22-25 on the home courts of the top 16 seeds. Regional action will take place March 29-April 1, with Albany, New York (Times Union Center) and Portland, Oregon (Moda Center) hosting on March 29 and 31, while Greensboro, North Carolina (Greensboro Coliseum) and Chicago, Illinois (Wintrust Arena) will host regional games on March 30 and April 1.
The 2019 Women's Final Four will be held April 5 at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, with the National Championship game to follow on April 7. Tonight's early reveal will have no bearing on the 64-team field for the 2019 championship that will be announced on Selection Monday, March 18 on ESPN at 6 p.m.
