by: Greg Campbell, Assistant Director/Communications
STARKVILLE – Sophomore Jordan Westburg hit .583 over the weekend to help the No. 2 Mississippi State baseball program to a series win over No. 16 Auburn at Dudy Noble Field and for his efforts was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week.
In five total games last week, Westburg led the Diamond Dawgs with a .556 batting average and reached base in all five games to help MSU to a 4-1 week. His .571 on-base percentage for the week was tied for tops on the team and he piled up 11 RBIs. Westburg posted multiple hits in four of the five contests and ran his reached base streak to nine games after finding his way on base in all five games.
He opened the week with a three-hit contest, scoring twice and driving in two runs against Little Rock, before reaching base just once at Samford – via walk. The New Braunfels, Texas had a monster weekend against Auburn, hitting .583 (7-of-12) to lead the Bulldogs in the three-game series and reached base at a .647 clip. He had multiple hits in each game versus the Tigers and reached base at least three times in each contest. He posted at least one extra base hit in all three games versus Auburn, including a double and home run in each of the final two contests. To cap his impressive weekend, Westburg drove in the eventual game winning run with an RBI double in the eighth inning to break a 15-15 tie and give MSU its second-straight SEC series win.
The conference player of the week honor is the second for a Diamond Dawg this season, as senior Elijah MacNamee earned the honor on March 18 after helping MSU to a series win at Florida. It is the fourth weekly award that MSU has earned in 2019, as freshman JT Ginn was named the SEC's Co-Freshman of the Week twice, on Feb. 25 and March 4.
The four SEC weekly honors are tied for the third most in program history with the 1985 and 2007 squads. In 2012, MSU earned five SEC weekly laurels, while the 2016 team brought home six weekly accolades during the season.
Mississippi State remains at home to continue its eight-game homestand, hosting Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday, March 26. First pitch between the Diamond Dawgs and Delta Devils is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday's game will pay homage to The Office, with "World's Best" coffee mugs handed out at the gates while supplies last
