STARKVILLE – To kick off an exciting 2019 outdoor track and field season, Mississippi State is set to host the Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays Friday and Saturday at the Mike Sanders Track Complex.
The meet, named for the long-time MSU head coach, starts at 10 a.m. Friday with the women's hammer, with the track events set to begin at 3 p.m. Admission is free for all spectators.
"We're really excited about opening up our outdoor season with our home meet," interim head coach Chris Woods said. "We don't get to compete in front of a hometown crowd very often, and that only happens during outdoor season. This meet is exciting for me, as a coach, because it gives our athletes the opportunity to perform at a high level in front of many people who often cheer them on from afar most of the year."
MSU's heralded "JavU" corps is set to open Saturday's action at 11 a.m. with the women's javelin followed by the men's flights. First gun for the track events is slated for 1:30 p.m. with the 4x100m relay.
The Bulldog men are ranked No. 12 in the USTFCCCA preseason TFRI rankings and return eight qualifiers from the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Championships, including javelin champion Anderson Peters and 800m runner-up Marco Arop, as well as Dejon Devroe (800m), Karson Kowalchuk (100m), Vince Castillo (4x400m relay), Charles Brockman III (400m hurdles) Malcum Tatum (400m hurdles) and Rasheed Tatham (400m hurdles, 4x400m relay). Curtis Thompson, the 2016 NCAA champion in the javelin, also returns for his final campaign.
On the women's side, All-Americans Logan Boss and Tiffany Flynn return for their final campaigns with the Maroon and White, while Alon Lewis, Monica Mosley and Riley White return after qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 4x400m relay.
State is coming off an indoor season that saw the Bulldog men finish inside the top 30 for the first time since 2014.
MSU will welcome teams from Alabama A&M, Alabama-Huntsville, Alcorn State, Arkansas State, Jackson State, Jacksonville State, Kennesaw State, Lane College, Louisiana College, Louisiana Tech, Memphis, Meridian Community College, Millsaps, Mississippi College, Mississippi Valley State, Mobile, New Orleans, North Alabama, Southern Miss, Southern-New Orleans, Stillman College, Talladega College, Troy, UAB, Louisiana-Monroe, West Alabama and William Carey.
