Children’s of Mississippi Kid Coach of the Week: Townes Craft
March 21, 2019 | Baseball
Kid Coach is a partnership between Children's of Mississippi and the Mississippi State Bulldogs to salute pediatric patients. Their inspirational stories remind us just how truly courageous these young people are.
This week's Children's of Mississippi Kid Coach is Townes Craft of Brandon.
At just three months old, doctors at Batson Children's Hospital diagnosed Townes with infantile Pompe. This rare, inherited disorder causes progressive muscle weakness, often severely affecting the heart.
A number of specialists provide care for Townes, now age three and thriving. He comes to the hospital every week for treatment that takes eight to nine hours each time. It includes enzyme replacement infusion, along with feeding, occupational, and physical therapy.
Although there is currently no cure, treatment allows Townes to display what his mom, Lanier, says is his greatest talent: "It's showing everyone exactly how awesome he is at kicking Pompe in the butt!"
Townes loves being outdoors, basketball, and playing with his siblings. A favorite thing at the hospital is pet therapy, because the dogs remind him of Mr. Leon, his dog at home.
Have fun at Saturday's game, Townes! Your friends at Children's of Mississippi are cheering for you!
