State Fights No. 10 South Carolina In SEC Opener; Ultimately Falls 4-1
March 02, 2019 | Women's Tennis
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Mississippi State's women's tennis squad (9-4, 0-1 SEC) dropped a hard-fought, 4-1 decision to the 10th-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks (6-2, 1-0 SEC) at the Carolina Tennis Center on Saturday. The match was originally scheduled for Friday at 4 p.m. CT, but storms and showers postponed the contest to Saturday after just a few points in doubles were played Friday evening.
Back underway around 11 a.m. ET Saturday, the Bulldogs battled hard in doubles play, but ultimately dropped the point to USC. On court 1, State's Magda Adaloglou and Tamara Racine fell in the first match complete to the nation's second-ranked pair of Mia Horvit and Ingrid Gamarra Martins 6-2.
On court 2, State's tandem of Emma Antonaki and Anastasia Rentouli evened things up with a 6-4 victory over USC's Silvia Chinellato and Paige Cline, which put all eyes on court 3 for the clinch. There, MSU's Janina Braun and Sara Lizariturry trailed 4-3 and a break to Megan Davies and Kennedy Wicker but broke to 4-4. From there, the Gamecocks claimed the final two games for a 6-4 victory and 1-0 edge heading into singles.
In singles State competed well at several positions, but the Gamecocks built their lead to 3-0 early with straight-set wins at the No. 1 and 4 positions. At the top spot, MSU's 89th-ranked Adaloglou fell to USC's 10th-ranked Gamarra Martins 6-1, 6-2. On court 4, State's newcomer Racine was ousted in a 6-3, 6-1 affair with the Gamecocks' Davies.
Despite the large deficit, State still battled strong on all remaining courts.
The 104th-ranked Antonaki grabbed State's lone win of the day at the No. 2 spot with a 7-5, 7-5 upset of the nation's 38th-ranked player in USC's Cline.
With two of the final three matches in third sets, the Gamecocks' Wicker finished a win over State's Lizariturry 7-6(4), 6-2 on court 6 to clinch the match for South Carolina.
Play on courts 3 and 5 were suspended at that point with MSU seniors Rentouli and Braun engaged in fierce affairs. Rentouli led USC's 95th-ranked Horvit 4-6, 6-4, 3-2 at No. 3 while Braun trailed Gamecock Chinellato 4-6, 6-2, 3-2 at the No. 5 spot.
Next Up For MSU…
The Bulldogs face a quick turnaround, matching up with the 43rd-ranked Florida Gators (4-4, 1-0 SEC) in Gainesville, Florida, on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT. The Gators are fresh off a 4-1 defeat of Ole Miss on Friday in their league opener.
"We didn't get the result we wanted today, but South Carolina deserves much of the credit for the win," said head coach Daryl Greenan. "I was happy we were able to raise our level compared to our loss last Friday. We had a good week of practice, and I think this was the best match we have played so far this spring. Everyone in this league is tough, so we just need to take some positives from this match and build on them moving forward."
