MESA, Ariz. – The Mississippi State women's golf team opened play Friday at the Clover Cup, recording an opening-round 10-over 298 to finish the day tied for second place at the Longbow Golf Club.
The Bulldogs are joined in second place by Kentucky and sit six strokes back from the leader, No. 1 ranked USC. State also has a one-stroke lead on No. 24 Oklahoma.
"This team is making such great strides," MSU head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. "Through improved body language and self-belief, we have seen the ability to bounce back. Our wedges and short game continue to show signs of strength, and by capitalizing on just a few more opportunities around the green, we will be seeing even lower numbers. We're glad to have played our self into a great position, just six shots behind the No. 1 team in the country."
Sophomore Aubree Jones led the way for MSU, carding an even-par 72 to tie for third place. She made a team-high five birdies during the round, carding three through the first seven holes and later adding two in the last four. It marked her sixth par-or-better round of the season.
Junior Ela Grimwood picked up a pair of birdies on the back nine en route to a 2-over par 74 round to tie for 11th.
The freshman duo of Hannah Levi and Lauren Miller each were 4-over 76 and are tied for 22nd. Levi birdied the eighth hole, and Miller birdied back-to-back on No. 4 and No. 5.
Playing as an individual, senior Kendall Wisenbaker recorded four birdies and closed out the day at 3-over 75, tying for 16th.
State returns to the course Saturday morning for the second round, teeing off at 9 a.m. CT. Live scoring will be available at BirdieFire.com.
