Bulldogs Drop 4-1 Decision To Rebels On The Road
March 10, 2019 | Women's Tennis
Oxford, Miss. – Mississippi State's women's tennis team (10-5, 1-2 SEC) grabbed an early lead against rival Ole Miss Sunday but was unable to ride that momentum into singles as the Bulldogs fell 4-1 to the Rebels in a match that featured several very tight matches.
State got off to a good start in the match with convincing victories at the No. 2 and 3 doubles positions. At No. 3, Bulldogs Janina Braun and Sara Lizariturry blistered Rebels Allie Sanford and Anna Vrbenska 6-0 in the first match complete. Then on court 2, MSU's tandem of Emma Antonaki and Anastasia Rentouli closed out a 6-3 triumph against UM's team of Tereza Janatova and Tea Jandric to put State up 1-0. UM led 4-3 on serve on court one when play was suspended.
In singles, things were extremely tight with five of the six first sets decided by 6-4, 7-5 or 7-6 scores. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Ole Miss claimed all five of those sets, in addition to the sixth, to mount a big lead early in singles.
UM tied the match up at 1-1 when Janatova down MSU true freshman Tamara Racine in a quick 6-1, 6-2 decision at the No. 4 position.
About 45 minutes later, the Rebels went up 3-1 with victories on courts 1 and 5 within moments of each other. At the top spot, UM's Jandric held off the 113th-ranked Bulldog Adaloglou in two fierce sets 6-4, 6-4. At No. 5, Bortles downed MSU's Lizariturry after taking a very tight first set - 7-6(5), 6-1.
The clinching point for Ole Miss would come on court 2, where Machalova upended MSU's 81st-ranked rookie Antonaki in a three-set war 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.
The two remaining matches at the No. 3 and 6 spots were suspended at that point with the Rebels leading both.
Next Up For MSU…
The Bulldogs now return to Starkville for their first SEC home matches of the season this weekend. State will host No. 36 Auburn (Friday, March 15 @ 3 p.m.) and Alabama (Sunday, March 17 @ Noon).
