STARKVILLE – Anriel Howard was one of six student-athletes added to the midseason watchlist for the Wade Trophy, the Women's Basketball Coaches Associate announced on Tuesday. Howard's group joins the 35 preseason selections that included Teaira McCowan.
Howard is averaging 15.5 points and 7.9 rebounds as a graduate student at Mississippi State. She holds Texas A&M's career rebounding record and is sixth among active players with 1,175 boards and second only to McCowan (1,316) in the SEC.
The Atlanta, Georgia, native is 8th among active SEC players with 1,271 career points and 13th among active players nationally with 37 career double-doubles
The Wade Trophy — now in its 42nd year — is the oldest and most prestigious national player of the year award in college women's basketball. It is named in honor of the late, legendary Delta State University head coach Lily Margaret Wade, who won three consecutive national championships with the Lady Statesmen. First awarded in 1978 by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), now known as SHAPE America, the Wade Trophy has been presented to the WBCA NCAA Division I National Player of the Year since 2001.
The WBCA will announce the four finalists for the honor in mid-March. The winner of the 2019 Wade Trophy will be announced April 4 in Tampa Bay, Florida — site of the 2019 WBCA Convention and NCAA Women's Final Four.
MSU also held steady at No. 6 in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches' polls. State has now been ranked in the AP poll for 88 straight weeks and has been a Top 10 team in the poll for 52 consecutive weeks, the fourth-longest streak in the nation.
The Bulldogs will host Tennessee in Humphrey Coliseum at 1 p.m. CT on Sunday, Feb. 10.
