Howard Leads State past Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – No. 6 Mississippi State turned in dominating second half on the defensive end of the floor to pull away to 65-49 win against Alabama on Sunday.
MSU (21-1, 9-0 SEC) claimed its 11th consecutive win and a 25th straight regular-season conference victory. The Bulldogs have now taken six straight from the Crimson Tide (11-11, 3-6 SEC).
In the third quarter, the Bulldogs held the Crimson Tide to just seven points. The Bulldogs forced 12 second-half turnovers. Overall, MSU has now held four straight conference foes to less than 50 points.
Anriel Howard led the Bulldogs with 24 points. Teaira McCowan recorded her 18th double-double of the season with 12 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks. Jazzmun Holmes added 10 points. Howard also had seven rebounds.
The Bulldogs never trailed in a contest played before a Maroon-dominant crowd of 3,769.
An early 6-0 run pushed the Maroon and White to a 15-7 advantage. Jordan Danberry scored a pair of baskets to push the lead back to eight points twice, including 21-13 after one quarter.
A 3-point play by Howard ran the lead to double figures at 30-20 with 7:22 left in the half. A 3-pointer by Andra Espinoza-Hunter and basket by Danberry later pushed the lead to 13 at 35-22. MSU led 39-27 at halftime.
In the second half, the Bulldogs took the next step defensively, as the Crimson Tide went close to five minutes before scoring in the second half. During that time, the Bulldogs got much-needed separation with an 8-0 run capped by a Holmes basket for a 47-27 lead with 5:46 left in the third quarter.
The lead would grow to as many as 23 midway through the fourth quarter. MSU held a 39-37 rebounding advantage. The Bulldogs had five assists, while forcing 18 turnovers.
Alabama received 15 points from Cierra Johnson and 12 points from Shaquera Wade.
The Bulldogs will return to Humphrey Coliseum on Sunday, Feb. 10, when they host Tennessee at 1 p.m. CT Sunday on ESPN.

"I have a lot of respect for [Alabama]," head coach Vic Schaefer said. "Those kids played really really hard, but I am awfully proud of my team. I thought we were really special defensively. We played really hard. I felt like our pressure defensively really did a nice job."
