STARKVILLE – Three close sets all went South Carolina's way Friday (Nov. 8) night as Mississippi State volleyball fell in straight sets.
Despite some strong individual performances, the Bulldogs (13-12, 2-11 SEC) just couldn't break through against the Gamecocks (15-8, 7-4 SEC).
"Tonight, was a tough one because, defensively, I didn't feel like we really stuck to our game plan," MSU volleyball coach Julie Darty said. "Offensively, we are going to have to be a little more efficient and not send so many errors and free points over to our opponent if we are going to be in these close sets. We played some good volleyball. In set two, it was back and forth, and you could feel the momentum.
"For them to out-block us, 6-2, I don't think that is characteristic of us and what we pride ourselves on. We are going to have to block more balls and get more positive touches to really hang with people. We out-dug them, and that's a positive, but our blockers really have to take care of their job before it gets to our back-court defenders."
A silver lining, senior setter Alleah Stamatis picked up her 11th double-double of the season, tying her career-high which was set as a sophomore while playing at Jacksonville. Her total also sits tied for third among all SEC student-athletes.
The senior setter collected 35 assists and a team-high 12 digs against the Gamecocks. Stamatis has collected double-doubles in back-to-back matches and four total in SEC play.
"Alleah had a great night," Darty said. "I thought they were targeting her, picking on her a little bit there in the beginning, and she was bought in and really stuck to it and was digging balls left and right."
Sophomores Gabby Waden and Deja Robinson benefitted from Stamatis' strong performance, with each picking up double-digit kills. Waden's 12 came on a team-best .370 hitting percentage, while Robinson lead the Bulldogs with 13 kills on a strong .346 mark.
"Waden had a good night," Darty said. "She was pretty efficient up there with only a couple errors. Getting her 27 swings and for her to lead us in attempts means that we did pass the ball at a pretty decent level."
Freshman Makenzie Jordan took over in the libero jersey in the second set as the Bulldogs forced South Carolina to extra points. Jordan's 11 digs finished second on the team.
"When we made the switch to Mackenzie in the jersey, I thought she did a really good job of stepping in and handling the ball well," Darty said. "I think we did that for passing reasons specifically, so we will get after it in practice tomorrow and figure out some stuff and then get back to it on Sunday."
First Set (South Carolina 25, Mississippi State 21)
Mississippi State played close for most of the opening set, but a 5-0 Gamecock run gave South Carolina a 18-14 lead that the Bulldogs couldn't recover from. Stamatis opened the match with three kills, 11 assists and five digs in the first set alone.
Second Set (South Carolina 26, Mississippi State 24)
The Bulldogs had set point in hand after back-to-back kills from freshman Callie Minshew gave them a 21-20 lead, but MSU just couldn't close it. South Carolina stole the second set with three-straight points.
Stamatis sealed her double-double after two sets, collecting 22 assists and 12 digs in that span.
Third Set (South Carolina 25, Mississippi State 21)
After going down 21-15, Mississippi State pulled back within two late on a South Carolina attack error. It wasn't enough, however, as the Gamecocks scored three of the last four points to seal the match victory.
Up Next
The Bulldogs are back in the Newell-Grissom Building Sunday (Nov. 10) to host No. 12 Florida.
"I think we are excited to keep playing these top-notch teams that are fighting for tournament berths," Darty said. "On Sunday, we are going to have to bring it. We are going to have to let loose and play without fear."
MSU volleyball will welcome freshman Callie Minshew's brother and Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback, Gardner Minshew, to Starkville for the honorary first serve.
