No. 41 Antonaki Battles No. 4 Graham In Close Three-Set Match At ITA All-Americans
October 09, 2019 | Women's Tennis
by Mikaela Elizondo, Graduate Assistant/Communications
TULSA, Okla. – Mississippi State's Emma Antonaki fought valiantly but ultimately fell in a three-set marathon, 6-4, 7-6(7), 6-3, to North Carolina's third-seeded Alexa Graham in round one of the ITA All-American Championships main draw Wednesday evening.
The match – ultimately play indoors at the Case Tennis Center at LaFortune Park - was delayed just over six hours due to rains that plagued the tournament throughout Wednesday.
The 41st-ranked Antonaki and fourth-ranked Graham went back-and-forth for much of the first set before Antonaki broke at love to clinch the first set against the Tar Heel senior All-American 6-4.
In set two, MSU's sophomore started off strong, earning an early break at 3-1 and led again at 5-3, but Graham fought back to force a tiebreaker which she took 9-7 to force the third and deciding set.
Seven service holds from the two players began the final set before Graham got the only break of the third to go up 5-3 and then serve out the victory.
Antonaki will now compete in the consolation draw. Her opponent and match time are to be determined.
Due to the weather issues, Wednesday's first round of doubles play was pushed to Thursday. State's 14th-ranked duo of Magda Adaloglou and Tamara Racine will kick off doubles play Thursday at 8:30 a.m. CT as they battle UCF's fifth-seeded and seventh-ranked pair of Ksenia Kuznetsova and Valeriya Zeleva.
