MOBILE, Alabama – Seven Golf Dawgs will make the trip to Steelwood Country Club to compete in the 2019 Steelwood Intercollegiate Invitational this weekend. The two-day event will take place from October 26-27.
State returns to the par-72, 7096 yard course for the second consecutive season. They earned a runner-up finish last year behind strong preformances from now-senior Peng Pichaikool and now-sophomore Ford Clegg, who both placed in the top 15.
This year's starting lineup will feature Pichaikool, along with Garrett Johnson and Clegg, who have both appeared in every team event this fall. Hunter Logan and Austin Fulton join the starting lineup.
William Wann and Ben Nelson will play as individuls for Mississippi State.
"This is a great opportunity for us as a team this week," head coach Dusty Smith said. "We need to be excited to compete and embrace the challenge that lies in front of us."
Pichaikool leads the lineup averging a 70.80 fall season scoring average. He placed tied for sixth at historic Pebble Beach to open the fall season.
Johnson has seen action in every team event in his senior campaign and secured his highest fall finish, tied for 16th, also at the Carmel Cup.
Clegg, a sophomore from Birmingham, Alabama, ended the last event at Trinity Forest in seventh place. He fired his best round to par, five-under (66). He has carded seven top 15 finishes in his young Bulldog career, after he captured an 11th place finish at the Steelwood Intercollegiate Invitational last season.
"I'm looking forward to teeing it up again at Steelwood Country Club this weekend," Clegg said. "After an amazing experience last year, between our solid play and the South Alabama hospitality, we can't wait to get out there again and finish the fall on a high note."
Logan, a freshman from Steens, Mississippi, is looking to ride the momentum from his career best final round at the TVC Community Credit Union Invitational as in individual. He collected seven birdies in the final round and posted the tournament's best round, 67.
Fulton will compete in the starting lineup for the third time this season. The junior from Villa Rica, Georgia has already matched his number of appearances in the lineup from last year.
Wann and Nelson will represent the Maroon and White as individuals this weekend. It will be Wann's third tournament of his freshman season.
Nelson will make his sophomore season debut. Last year, he played in five events and logged one start en route to a 13th place performance coming at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship.
"We focused a lot these past couple of weeks on getting off to better starts in our rounds," Smith said. "There is no doubt we have great competitive character on this team, but we need to do a better job of being ready to go as soon as we put our peg in the ground."
"We talked a lot as a team about going out and striving to be the best version of you, you can possibly be," Smith continued. "All the clutter and outside noise doesn't matter. It's about focusing on your job and playing to your standard. If we embrace that approach and continue to strive for excellence everyday, we will be successful."
The 13-team field consists of Arkansas State, Cincinnati, Davidson, Indiana, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, Navy, North Alabama, Rice, Richmond, South Alabama and Wofford.
The Bulldogs are slated to play two rounds Saturday, weather permitting, with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. CT. Then, MSU will return to the course for 18 holes on Sunday, 7:40 a.m. CT start on holes 1 and 10.
