STARKVILLE – Down 6-4 in a second-set tiebreaker against Arizona's Jonas Maier on Sunday, No. 3 Mississippi State's Trevor Foshey felt confident and comfortable.
The 93rd-ranked senior stormed back to take the final four points and defeat Maier 6-4, 7-6(6) to clinch the Bulldogs' (2-0) 4-1 victory against the Wildcats (3-1) in the championship match of 2019 ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre. MSU's win marked its 1,000th in program history and helped State punch its ticket to the 2019 ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Chicago in February.
"I wasn't too worried," Foshey said. "I knew I had my teammates behind me and was down 6-4 again. When I got into that position, I knew I was going to grind and not miss, so he'd have to play some really good shots. I felt really comfortable in that position."
MSU got an early 1-0 lead by claiming the doubles point for the 13th straight match dating back to last season. State's 36th-ranked Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic knocked off Arizona's Stewart Block and Igor Karpovets by a 6-3 mark at No. 1 to start off doubles action. Moments later, the seventh-ranked Bulldog tandem of Niclas Braun and Giovanni Oradini clinched the point with a 6-2 triumph against Wildcats Carlos Hassey and Jonas Ziverts.
Foshey and Gregor Ramskogler led Jonas Maier and Alejandro Reguant 5-2 at the clincher.
The Bulldogs pulled ahead 2-0 when the 11th-ranked Borges posted a quick 6-2, 6-2 win against Karpovets on court 1. MSU's 78th-ranked Florian Broska made it 3-0 MSU with a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Hassey at the No. 6 spot.
Arizona's lone point came when Filip Malbasic held off MSU's Rakic 6-2, 7-6(3) on court 3 to make it 3-1 Bulldogs. From there, it was a race to the finish on courts 2, 4 and 5 to see who would seal the deal for the Maroon and White.
Foshey was first to the punch, battling back from down 6-4 in the second-set tiebreaker to clinch State's victory and send the Bulldogs to the National Team Indoor Championship for the first time since 2017 and for the 12th time in program history.
"Our seniors have done everything possible to put us in a good position to go to National Indoors," head coach Matt Roberts said. "I'm really proud of how they've led this program and competed, and it's very fitting to see Trevor be the guy to make that push today. I'm just really proud of all the guys, and we'll turn right back around and get ready for another tough weekend at home next weekend."
At the time of Foshey's clincher, Oradini led Ziverts 7-6(6), 5-4 at No. 2 while Braun was up 6-3, 6-5 over Wildcat Reguant on court 4.
