STARKVILLE – Temperatures may have been near-freezing early Saturday morning in Starkville, but that would not be indicative of the No. 3 Mississippi State men's tennis team's season opener against Wichita State in the afternoon.
The Bulldogs (1-0) took advantage of a quick clinch in doubles action and claiming five first sets in singles to cruise to a 4-0 victory against the Shockers (1-2) in the first round of the 2019 ITA Kick-Off Weekend. MSU's victory marked the 999th in its 95-year history.
"I thought the guys did a great job preparing for this match," head coach Matt Roberts said. "They were loose and confident, and they came out really focused and ready to play sharp today. Give Wichita State credit, they did great in their first sets, putting a lot of pressure on our guys on every court. Our guys did a great job of trusting themselves and sticking to their game plan. From there, we started to pick up momentum and I'm really proud of how we fought together as a team."
State got off to a quick start in doubles, getting a swift 6-0 victory on court 1 from 36th-ranked Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic against WSU's Marius Frosa and Eddie Stoica.
The Bulldogs' clincher came on court 3, as Trevor Foshey and Gregor Ramskogler notched a 6-2 win against Andrea Caligiana and Stefan Latinovic to improve to 6-0 on the year. No. 7 Niclas Braun and Giovanni Oradini were locked in a 3-all tie at the clincher at No. 2. MSU led 1-0 at the break.
Wichita State battled back in singles, applying early pressure on all six courts. MSU responded well, fighting back to win five first sets. The two-time All-American and reigning SEC Player of the Year Borges was first off the court, breaking WSU's Murkel Dellien on a deciding point to take a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 1.
Moments later, the Bulldogs mounted a 3-0 lead when the 67th-ranked Braun notched a 6-4, 6-0 decision over Shocker Stefan Latinovic on court 4. At No. 6, Florian Broska provided the clincher for the Maroon and White with a 6-4, 6-3 victory against WSU's Eddie Stoica.
Oradini, Rakic and Foshey were all up a set and leading in their second frames when Broska ended the match.
"I thought I played smart today," Broska said. "I was making good decisions, and I thought it was a good start. We had a lot of energy and a lot of support for one another."
State wore special teal uniforms in memory of softball's Alex Wilcox, who died in June after a battle with ovarian cancer.
"It was so great to be able to honor Alex by wearing the teal jerseys today," Roberts said. "We reminded the guys after doubles that all eight of us compete as a team, and her number is eight, so there's a lot of symbolism with that. She made such a huge impact on this community during her time here and her legacy continues to do so."
