EAST LANSING, Mich. – Freshmen Hannah Levi and Lauren Miller showed why they were both top junior golfers on Sunday, as the duo helped the Mississippi State women's golf team to a ninth-place finish at the season-opening Mary Fossom Invitational in East Lansing, Michigan.
After finding the going tough on Saturday in their first collegiate debuts, Levi and Miller combined to fire eight birdies on Sunday in leading State to a final-round 298.
Levi opened her round with a birdie, and she added another on No. 17 to go wrap the back side of the course at even par. She then added two more on the second and fifth holes before capping her round with a birdie on No. 10. The D'Iberville, Miss., native recorded State's low round of the day with a 72 to finish 63rd with a 233 total.
Miller shot a final-round 74 to cap her MSU debut with a tie for 37th. The Niceville, Fla., native finished the back nine at 2-over, but used birdies on Nos. 1 and 9 to wrap the front nine at even par.
Ela Grimwood also had a solid season opener for MSU, recording the best finish of her young career with a tie for 20th. Grimwood wrapped the event with a 77, but earned the Top-20 finish thanks to a solid Saturday that saw her follow a career low-tying 71 with a 72.
While she saw areas for improvement at Forest Akers West Golf Club, head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm also saw a talented squad that possessed a great deal of potential.
"We had lots of successes to build on in our first outing," Brown-Lemm said. "Ela matched her best collegiate round and had her best finish. We had two freshmen travel, and each learned valuable lessons that will benefit them going forward. Both played well today, with Hannah shooting even-par and Lauren shooting 2-over. We have around 10 days until our next event, and we have already planned some skill-building practices to get better prepared. With work and more experience, the future looks great for this team."
Clara Moyano consistently executed this weekend, putting together a 3-over 75 on Sunday to finish the weekend tied for 33rd with a 225.
Senior Katie Holt registered a second-straight 77 to wrap the weekend tied for 60th.
Virginia took the team title with an 857, while the Cavalier's Anna Redding and Allyson Geer-Park of host Michigan State tied for the individual title with 9-under-par cards.
The Bulldogs will have an off weekend before traveling to Norman, Oklahoma, Sept. 28-30 for the Schooner Fall Classic.
