Soccer Opens SEC Play at Auburn Friday

STARKVILLE – Looking to match the best start in program history, Mississippi State's soccer team will travel to No. 9/17 Auburn on Friday night with a 7-0-0 record while riding an eight-game winning streak. The Bulldogs will kick off the conference season at 6:30 p.m. CT with the match broadcasting on SEC Network+.

The arrival of conference play pits two of the SEC's four unbeaten teams against each other this week. In addition to MSU and Auburn (7-0-0), No. 4/4 Texas A&M (8-0-0) and No. 11/10 Tennessee (6-0-1) have yet to drop a match this season.

"They are a great team," head coach Tom Anagnost said. "(Auburn head coach) Karen (Hoppa) and her staff always do such a wonderful job there, and we will have to play our best tomorrow."

Auburn is off to the best start of its program's history as well. The Bulldogs will try to snap their streak by claiming their first win in the all-time series since 2011 and first ever in Auburn. A win would be State's first over a top-10 team since knocking off then-No. 8 Tennessee, 3-2, on Sept. 24, 2006.

Despite receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches' poll in each of the past two weeks, the Bulldogs face quite a challenge in the SEC. MSU has the toughest conference slate with their opponents finishing 2017 with an average RPI of 27.6.

State boasts the most potent offense in the league, averaging 3.26 goals per game this year, but the Bulldog defense has been the highlight of the year so far. MSU is holding opponents to just 6.9 shots per game and is second in the NCAA in shutout percentage (.857) behind only No. 2/3 Florida State.

The Bulldogs will be off on Sunday before returning home to host No. 15/7 South Carolina on Thursday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. CT.
