STARKVILLE – After finishing the 2017 season third in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association South Region and fifth in the Southeastern Conference, the Mississippi State cross country team again has its sights set on another strong campaign.
The Bulldogs were projected to finish fourth by the SEC's coaches, while also being preseason ranked No. 5 in the USTFCCCA South Region on Monday. On Tuesday, the USTFCCCA national rankings will be announced.
"It's nice to have that ranking by our name in a poll, but we have to do our part on the course to live up to that," head coach Houston Franks said. "It's also great to be picked to finish near the top of such a very tough conference, but our goal is to win the whole thing. That finish in November is what ultimately matters to us, so we can't wait to get started this weekend in Memphis."
State was the third highest-ranked SEC squad in the preseason regional rankings, behind Georgia and Auburn at Nos. 1 and 3, respectively.
In the SEC preseason poll, Arkansas earned 13 of 14 possible first place votes en route to being predicted to win the league. Georgia received the other vote. The poll was awarded on a 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12-13 basis. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own teams.
The Bulldogs open their season Sept. 1 at the Memphis Twilight Classic at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex in Memphis, Tennessee. Before the SEC Championships in Auburn, Alabama, on Oct. 26, MSU is set to run in four meets in addition to Saturday's outing in Memphis.
