NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Mississippi State soccer will play its first road match of the 2018 season on Sunday night when the Bulldogs visit Stephen F. Austin. The match will be streamed through Facebook Live with kickoff set for 7 p.m. CT.
Both teams have their first win under the belt as the Lady Jacks are fresh off a Friday night victory over LSU-Shreveport. State opened the season at home on Thursday with a 3-0 win against Southern Miss.
"Stephen F. Austin is a very good program that wins a lot of games," head coach Tom Anagnost said. "We need to demonstrate that we learn and grow from each game, so we can perform better."
MSU won the only prior meeting between the two programs. The Bulldogs claimed a 1-0 victory in Starkville in front of a record-setting 1,349 fans to open the season last year.
The Bulldogs got two goals from sophomore Gabriella Coleman on Thursday night, while junior MaKayla Waldner was responsible for the game-winner in the fourth minute. Waldner continues to chase the MSU record for career game-winning goals and is now just two shy of tying Meredith Riekert's mark of eight.
Going back to last year, State has scored within the first five minutes in three consecutive matches and has a five-game streak of scoring first. Over those last five games, MSU is 3-1-1.
The Bulldogs have also shutout consecutive opponents. If the Maroon and White can repeat its shutout performance from last year against the Lady Jacks, it would mark the longest streak of shutouts since 2012 when the Bulldogs turned in a clean sheet in six straight matches.
Under second-year head coach Tom Anagnost, who became the fastest Bulldog coach in program history to 10 wins on Thursday, MSU has played stout defense. State finished with a 1.00 goals against average last season, which was the second-lowest mark in school history.
MSU held Southern Miss to just two shots and only allowed one on goal in its last match. The last time the Bulldogs kept an opponent from putting any shots on frame was against Stephen F. Austin last year. Including their preseason exhibitions, the Bulldogs have held opponents to an average of just 3.0 shots on goal per game in 2018.
