MSU Women’s Tennis Closes Out Solid Summer

STARKVILLE, Miss. – With the fall season fast approaching, another summer is in the books for the Mississippi State women's tennis team.
Most recently, Bulldog newcomer Emmanouela Antonakis put on an impressive display at the 2018 European Junior Championships in Switzerland, reaching the Round of 16. In her run, she downed two opponents ranked in the top-160, including a victory against the No. 42 junior in the world Adrienn Nagy of Hungary.
Antonakis also shined in the Women's Championships of Greece earlier this summer, reaching the semifinals of the singles draw.
Rising senior Anastasia Rentouli saw time in a trio of tournaments in Portugal over the summer. In her second tourney, Rentouli notched a pair of qualifying draw triumphs, including advancing to the third round of qualifying after her opponent, Natalia Orlova (WTA 1215), retired down 3-2 in the third set.
In early July, Rentouli had arguably her best showing so far this summer—reaching the doubles semifinals in Corroios-Seixal, Portugal. In the qualifying singles draw, despite dropping a 6-3, 6-3 decision in the third round, Rentouli managed to notch a win against the talented Claudia Gaspar, who held the world's No. 1004 rank at the time.
In her lone ITF tournament in June, State senior-to-be Janina Braun had little trouble qualifying for the main draw of the Future Nord in Kaltenkirchen, Germany, defeating three opponents with two results in straight sets. Upon reaching the main draw, however, she dropped a tough decision to talented junior Mina Hodzic (WTA 987) in the first round.
Rising junior Sara Lizariturry competed in a pair of tournaments in the month of June, playing both in Madrid, Spain. To start off the month, the native Spaniard notched a couple of quick wins in the qualifying draw before dropping a tough decision in the final round. She also played a match in the doubles main draw, dropping a hard-fought three-setter in the Round of 16.
In her second tournament, also in Madrid, Lizariturry reached the second round of qualifying with a quick 6-1, 6-0 victory in the first round.
The Bulldogs now turn their attention to the fall season, which will be released at a later date.
