MSU Women’s Tennis To Travel To Gainesville For 2019 ITA Kick-Off

STARKVILLE, Miss. – A familiar locale will be the site of the 2019 ITA Kick-Off Weekend for the Mississippi State women's tennis team, as the Bulldogs will head down to Gainesville, Fla., for the four-team tournament held Jan. 26-27.
In addition to the Bulldogs, who ended the 2018 season ranked No. 29 nationally after reaching the NCAA team championship for a program-best fourth year in a row, the four-team field in Gainesville will feature host No. 11 Florida, No. 34 North Carolina State and No. 72 UC Santa Barbara.
First-round matches will be played Saturday, Jan. 26. A consolation match will be played Sunday morning, Jan. 27, before the winners of the two first round matches square off Sunday afternoon with the victor moving on to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, to be held in February in Seattle, Wash. (hosted by the University of Washington).
The weekend will mark the 11th year of the event, with MSU making its fifth appearance. Saturday's first match features the Bulldogs against N.C. State, followed by the Gators taking on UCSB.
Florida finished the 2018 campaign with a 19-9 overall mark and reached the finals of the SEC Championship in Knoxville, Tenn. The Gators then dropped a 4-3 decision to arch-rival Florida State in the second round of the NCAA Championship in Gainesville.
State's opening-round opponent in the ITA Kick-Off, N.C. State, owned a 17-15 ledger this past spring and reached the quarterfinals of the ACC Championship, losing 5-0 to Duke. In the NCAA Championship, the Wolfpack dropped its first-round match to Baylor, 4-3. The match will mark the first meeting between the two teams.
UCSB closed out the 2018 season with 12-13 overall record, but went 7-1 in Big West action. In the Big West Championship, the Gauchos reached the semifinals, where they dropped a hard-fought 4-3 decision to eventual league champion Hawaii. MSU and UCSB have never met on the courts.
