STARKVILLE, Miss. – With the first round of postseason competition ahead of them, Mississippi State's men's track and field team is No. 19 in the latest USTFCCCA rankings. Head coach Steve Dudley's squad has now been ranked in every week of the season and are up one spot from last week.
The Bulldogs are on their way to Tampa, Fla., for the NCAA East Prelims this weekend. Fifteen total individuals qualified in 11 events. The men will also run the 4x100m and 4x400m relays on Saturday.
"Our goal is always to be a Top 10 team by the end of the year," Dudley said. "The rankings don't matter as much as where we finish in Eugene."
MSU is tied for 12th in the nation with 17 men's entries. The Bulldogs boast the most athletes in the men's 400m hurdles (4) in the East region and are second only to Texas A&M (5) in the nation.
State will have multiple athletes in three other events. Anderson Peters and Nicolas Quijera are the top two seeds in the region in javelin. Ro'Derick Spears, who holds the school record, and Willie-Lionel Reed will run the 110m hurdles, and freshman record holder Marco Arop and Dejon Devroe are in the 800m.
Spears, along with 400m hurdlers Rasheed Tatham and Vince Castillo, is expected to play a part on one of the Bulldogs' relay teams. Juston Waters will also compete in multiple events as he has run on both relays multiple times this season. Waters is running individually in the 400m. Karson Kowalchuk rounds out the doubling athletes, competing in the 100m and 200m.
The Bulldogs are one of five SEC teams that qualified for both the men's and women's 4x400m relay. Only 25 schools across the nation achieved that feat.
