No. 32 MSU Women’s Tennis Upends No. 31 Tennessee 4-2; Greenan Earns 100th MSU Triumph
April 05, 2018 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – In a match that came down to the final three matches on court, the 32nd-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team (15-7, 6-5 SEC) held off a late rally by No. 31 Tennessee (16-8, 2-8) for a 4-2 triumph Thursday afternoon in front of the home crowd at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
Thursday's victory marked the fourth straight for MSU in the head-to-head series with Tennessee. Coach Daryl Greenan recorded his 100th career triumph at MSU, tying Tracy Lane for the most wins in State women's tennis history.
"It was another tough battle today as expected," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "Tennessee was coming in with a lot of confidence and we were coming off a couple tough losses. I am proud of the way we stepped up when we had our chance. We play hard every match which doesn't always guarantee a win in this league, but it is that same effort combined with a little courage to take it when the opportunity presents itself. Nobody gives you anything at this level. That was a huge win for us at this point in the season."
The Bulldogs fought off a late surge by the Volunteers in doubles to get the opening point of the afternoon. UT's duo Elizabeth Profit and Chelsea Sawyer made quick work of State's Sara Lizariturry and Anastasia Rentouli 6-2 on court 3. At No. 2, the Bulldog pair of Magda Adaloglou and Janina Braun held off UT's tandem of Sadie Hammond and Gabby Schuck 6-3.
All eyes then turned to the No. 1 spot and a tiebreaker to decide things. Dominating in the tiebreak, State's 87th-ranked Madison Harrison and Khrystyna Vozniak upended UT's 47th-ranked Ariadna Riley and Kaitlin Staines 7-6(0) on court 1, giving MSU the early 1-0 lead.
Despite the Bulldogs taking four of the six first sets, the Volunteers would not go down quietly, forcing two matches to a third set.
First off the courts in a dominate performance at the No. 1 position, MSU's Harrison posted a straight-set – 6-1, 6-0 – triumph against UT's Hammond, extending the Bulldog lead to 2-0.
The Tigers responded by taking the next two singles matches in straight-set fashion as well. On court 2, UT's Profit ousted MSU's Braun 6-4, 6-1. Following close behind at No. 5, UT's Schuck triumped 7-6(3), 6-1 against the Maroon & White's Lizariturry to tie things at 2-all.
With the two of the last three matches all going to third sets, and another being played very tightly, Rentouli extended MSU's lead to 3-2, holding off UT's Staines 7-5, 7-5 in a tough battle on court 4. Rentouli continued the magic she has produced much of the season, rallying from 4-1 down and saving four set points in the first set, as well as 5-2 down in the second, to claim the pivotal victory.
That set up the clinching the match at the No. 3 spot, where the Bulldog true freshman Adaloglou outlasted UT's Riley in three-sets 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 – with a determined third set - to secure the 4-2 victory for MSU.
The remaining match was suspended with UT's Johanna Silva leading MSU's Vozniak 2-6, 6-1, 6-5 on serve at the No. 6 position.
