STARKVILLE, Miss. – For the third year in a row, Mississippi State women's tennis has landed two players on the All-Southeastern Conference team, the league announced Wednesday. Wednesday's release marks only the fourth time in program history that MSU has had two players named All-SEC in the same season and the sixth consecutive season State has had representation on the all-league squad.
Senior Madison Harrison and junior Anastasia Rentouli both earned All-SEC Second Team laurels, marking the first career All-SEC honor for both Bulldogs.
After sitting out the fall while recovering from injury, Harrison is 11-11 and 10-10 in dual match play this spring, while holding down the No. 1 position in MSU's lineup. During SEC action, Harrison was able to take down three conference foes. In doubles, the Bradenton, Florida, product has teamed with fellow senior Khrystyna Vozniak to form the nation's 55th-ranked tandem while also playing No. 1 for State. The duo is 15-8 overall, 11-7 in dual match action with a 5-6 SEC record, and has four ranked wins to their credit (all coming in the last month of play).
Rentouli picks up her All-SEC honor having compiled team-leading 22-6 overall and 14-3 dual match (7-2 SEC) singles records, mainly competing at the No. 4 position. After the Bulldogs dropped their first two conference matches, they won a program-record five-straight SEC contests and Rentouli was a huge part of the reason. She claimed five-consecutive, three-set, match-clinching wins in all five of those victories, with three of the wins coming after being a set down. To start the streak, the Athens, Greece, native clinched MSU's win against then No. 2 (now top-ranked) SEC Champion Vanderbilt, which was the highest ranked win in both MSU men's and women's tennis history. Rentouli is 13-8 in doubles with partner Sara Lizariturry this spring and the duo has contributed to 11 of MSU's 15 doubles points this season.
"Madison and Anna were excellent leaders for our team this season," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "They set great examples of commitment and competitiveness which our team embraced. The SEC is clearly the premier conference in the nation. It is a great honor for these two Bulldogs to be given this award voted on by the SEC coaches."
MSU's two All-SEC honorees and the remainder of the 31st-ranked Bulldog women's tennis squad now wait to hear their 2018 NCAA Team Championship destination. The NCAA Women's Tennis Selection Show will air next Tuesday, May 1, at 4 p.m. CT on NCAA.com. State is expected to receive an NCAA bid for a program-record fourth consecutive season and the eighth time overall.
The NCAA First and Second Rounds will be held May 11-13, with the finals being held in Winston-Salem, N.C., at Wake Forest University May 17-22.
